Mirabai (Devotee of Lord Krishna)

Mirabai (Devotee of Lord Krishna)

"Aisi Laagi Lagan" is a deeply devoted song about the Indian Saint Mirabai. She was one of the foremost saints of her time and one of the leading influencers of Bhakti's thoughts in India.

A Life Sketch of Saint Mirabai

Mirabai was born in 1498 in Koudki in the royal family of the Marwar kingdom of Rajasthan. Her mother passed away early after she was born.

In her childhood, she was given an idol of Lord Krishna, which she accepted as her beloved. She would live with that idol as if she were living with a living Krishna. She paid very little attention to worldly enjoyments and accomplishments. She would think about Lord Krishna alone.

She was married to King Bhoj Raj of Mewar kingdom against her will as she was away from worldly matters. Her husband had to go to war with the Sultanate of Delhi, where he was injured and eventually died after some time. Her father and father-in-law also sacrificed their lives in wars against Sultanate.

Rana Vikram Singh became the king of Mewar and there are many cases among people who tell of attempts to assassinate Mirabai by him. Sometimes he sent a glass of poison to Meera and said it was nectar, but Mirabai drank it fearlessly and miraculously there was no effect on her.

In another incident, the Rana sent a basket filled with snakes instead of flowers for her worshiping time. When Mira opened the basket, there were garlands of flowers in it (also a miracle).

During the last days of her lifetime, Mirabai went on a pilgrimage and stayed in Dwarka or Vrindavan where she spent most of time worshiping Lord Krishna.

The Story of Her Devotion

The song "Aisi Laagi Lagan" explains the story of devotion of Mirabai towards the lord.

The lyrics were chosen in such an intricate manner that it appears like the songwriter is himself the Mirabai. There is no clear evidence about it being written by Mirabai, however, or penned down through generations from the times of Mirabai.

Below is a little effort to translate this beautiful collection of words towards the devotion of Lord in the English language. The Hindi lyrics have also been written using Roman letters.
