Writing About Your School in German

My lovely German essay writers, if you need to write a German essay about your middle school, high school or any other school, you've come to the right place. With my help, your essay will be a great success. Before you start, check out this list of topics to get an idea of what you might want to write about:

  • Type of school: Do you attend grammar school, middle school, high school or university?
  • What are your favorite subjects? Be sure to give examples of why you like them.
  • What are your least favorite subjects? Be sure to give examples of why you dislike them.
  • Who is you favorite teacher? Who is your least favorite teacher? Explain why.
  • What are your classmates like?
  • What is your opinion on your school uniform, or your school's dress code?
  • Describe the physical appearance of your school: Is it nice? Is it big or small?
  • Describe the food offered in the cafeteria and offer your opinion of it.
  • Describe the sport teams at your school.
  • Describe your school's achievements and awards.
  • Is bullying a problem at your school? How can this problem be fixed?
  • Is your school very strict? Are you assigned a lot of homework?

If your German is not very good and you have difficulty creating sentences, I recommend you keep your sentences short. I often encounter hard-to-read German essays because the student is not comfortable with the language and jumbles the words. German can be difficult when compared to English, so start with sentences that are short and clear.

Essay Examples

1.) "I like my school."

Da muss man ja einschlafen.

English Translation:

I am in year 9 in a middle school in Dresden. I like it there a lot. Nearly all of my teachers are nice and helpful. Only my R.E. teacher is so boring that I tend to fall asleep during the lesson, and the student next to me always gives me a nudge to wake me up. The teacher always speaks very slowly and with a monotone voice. You've got to fall asleep. I enjoy cooking most because I just find our school kitchen marvelous. There is so much to discover, you are always active, and you don't just have to listen the whole time. In addition to that there is always a mishap happening which I find very funny. Our school kitchen is really modern because our headteacher was collecting donations for new equipment. In summer we also sell cakes and self-made delicatessen during our school fair every year. Our school building is quite modern. I think it was built in the 80s. The class rooms are big enough and bright. The corridors are spacey and relatively bare. There are only a few information boards on the wall, but no decoration whatsoever. I like it a lot that everywhere it is really bright and smells freshly cleaned. The toilets are medium clean I would say. Some parents complained about the school toilets, but it only improved in parts afterwards. Another thing I would change are the transport connections to school. Buses are often late because cars are always blocking the narrow streets in the vicinity of the school. There is no lunch room at school. Everybody has to bring there own food from home and eat outside on the school yard.

2.) "I don't like my school."

English Translation:

I don't enjoy school. My teachers are all way too strict. Everything is forbidden, for example mobile phones and mp3 players. If you bring such a device to school and get caught you have to hand it in immediately, and your parents will be invited to come to school and pick it up. When we are in the ICT suite we are rarely allowed to use the computers for fun things. Our teachers say that is because we are not behaving sensibly and therefore don't deserve it. In addition to that there is too much homework, and that daily. If you don't do your homework, you will get detention. Our teachers control our homework books on a daily basis. Our headteacher wants us all to improve so that the school will get a reputation as being especially successful. Our lunch provision is also quite a role model I would say. They only serve super healthy food. There are not sweet drinks, and we only get natural yogurt and fresh fruit as dessert. Normally I bring something from home. Sometimes we sneak out of school to fetch some chips from the store down the street. Once in a while a teacher is on a inspection round and sends us back. The only thing I like about my school is the football club which takes place twice a week, directly after the last lesson. The coach is so laid back and everybody finds him great.

3.) "My school is not good or bad."

Dabei will ich doch später mal studieren.

English Translation:

My school is alright, I would say. A few of my friends go to another school, but here are a few nice people as well. Unfortunately, they all live in another village than me. During break time, though, we have a good chat about all sorts of things which relaxes me after a stressful lesson. The ladies who give out our hot meals in the dining room are also really nice. They also let us come back for seconds if we ask politely. I don't like the toilets. There are always some horrible people hanging around there and doing silly things. The loos are dirty as well. My favourite teacher is our maths teacher. He is always so much fun. You completely forget you are in the middle of learning maths. Since he is our teacher my maths has improved a lot.

Altogether, I feel school is too stressful in general. You always have to worry about your marks and if you can do your A-Levels later. After all I want to study one day. Fortunately, most of the students in class are supportive and help each other. The teachers make us work in groups quite a lot, because they say we have to learn team work since it will be important in our future working life.

I LOVE ALL your articles!!!

but I also need an article on my school routine, I'm hoping that you could write an article on that too...

bongawonga (author) from UK on June 09, 2019:

Dear German learning community, I'm always looking for new helpful topics to write about. A few of you have made comments already that they would like me to write about future life plans and I can confirm that I am working on it at the moment. Sometimes it takes time to get some ideas to write about. If you want send me some English text about your future life plans, then I could feature the four most interesting ones in my next hub. The text needs to be about 200 words long. 20 words less or more would be OK.

Thank you for your help!
