Free German Essay on Hobbies for GCSE—High School
How to Write a Good German Essay
Hello back!
Are you still unhappy with your German essay and need some more support? If your teacher told you to write about your hobbies you can find some ready made examples in this article. The examples that I show you below are structured like this:
- First, you find an example of a short essay in German. It shows you how you can describe your own family. Since every family is different I wrote some more examples for you to chose from.
- After the German part follows a part where I tell you in English what the German text is about.
- After the examples of short essays, you will find a list of German keywords and conjugated verbs that I provided for you so that you do not have to look it up in a dictionary. My aim is to provide a time effective aid for your German homework.
Now better get started and impress your teacher!
Example 1 - Football Fan
Ich liebe es, mir Fußballspiele anzusehen. Mein Lieblingsteam ist (put your favourite team in here).
In English I would say it like this:
I love to watch football/ soccer games. My favourite teams are ....Normally I watch the matches on tv but sometimes is my father taking me to the stadium as a special treat. I also save all my pocket money for tickets and for football memorabilia. I like to bring some friends home, too, so that we can watch the games together. Then we are always eating tons of popcorn and litres of lemonade that we make ourselves before the game starts. For my last birthday, my parents even allowed me to take some friends to the stadium with us. That was real fun and we ate hotdogs. I think we were the loudest group to cheer for our team. Sometimes I play football myself. But I don't want to be in a club because it would take away too much of my spare time. When we are visiting my aunt and my uncle in the holidays I always play football with my cousins. In the next summer holidays, I would like to try windsurfing when we go to California. I love the beach as well and the feeling of the wind and the sun on my skin so that I think that would be the perfect hobby for me, too.

Example 2 - Hanging out with Friends
In English:
I don't have any special hobbies. I think I just like doing what all young people like. I like going to the movies, hanging out in the park, playing cards sometimes and chatting a lot about music, people and so on. When I am on my own I play computer games, watch tv, or upload my own YouTube videos. I guess my computer skills are not so bad. But I always get in trouble with my parents because they don't want me to be in front of the computer or tv when I am at home. They suggest I should learn to play an instrument like my sister does. She is playing the piano and I think that is enough for the whole family. I'd rather do other things where I don't have to go somewhere regularly. I want to be flexible with my time so that I can spontaneously join in some fun with my friends. Yesterday we decided to go swimming when we came out of school and just went. That was great.

jemanden durch den Kakao ziehen
This is one possibility to say "to pull someone's leg" in German.
But be careful. Do not try to translate a saying in German on your own. This could have embarrassing results!

Dear German learning community, I'm always looking for new helpful topics to write about. A few of you have made comments already that they would like me to write about future life plans and I can confirm that I am working on it at the moment. Sometimes it takes time to get some ideas to write about. If you want send me some English text about your future life plans, then I could feature the four most interesting ones in my next hub. The text needs to be about 200 words long. 20 words less or more would be OK.
Thank you for your help!
