This is a hub series covering specific vocabulary for French learners who wish to improve their French capabilities and broaden their lexis so that they can have more varied conversations.

This first hub will cover pollution vocabulary.

First: Simple & Necessary Vocabulary

A greenhouse gas -> un gaz à effet de serre
Carbon -> le charbon
Oil -> le pétrole
Natural gas -> le gaz naturel
CO2 -> CO2
Sulfur dioxide -> le dioxyde de soufre
Smog -> le smog
Industrial era -> l'ère industrielle
Melting of the ice caps -> la fonte des calottes glaciaires

Drought -> la sécheresse
Floods -> l'inondation

Harmful -> nuisible
Noxiousness -> nocivité
Noxious -> nocif/nocive

French Phrases

English Translation

Air pollution is caused by:

Water pollution (rivers, oceans and seas) is the result of:

  • Sewers

Pollution can:

  • Induce illnesses in plants, animals and humans
  • Upset the natural equilibrium of ecosystems
  • Lead to the extinction of animals

  • Turn off the light whilst leaving the room
  • Refuse chemical treatment
  • Not use "standby" mode on electrical appliances
  • Insulate your home
