Profile Of A Poet

As you journey though life, you meet a few people who can change your perception of personal existence through one encounter. Juliet Wilson is one of these special people who, after speaking with her for just a few minutes, will cause you to reflect upon your personal pursuit of happiness.

Juliet's gift and passion is to share her life's experience through poetry and written word. From the time she was just a child, she felt led to write poetry to inspire others on the beauty of living well. Where others would sing, she would offer to recite her poetry before her church congregation.

Juliet's writing career began after high school. Her desire was to be used as an instrument, even if only by a smile, as a blessing to others. Her question was, "do you think God could use my poetry as a gift to others?"

Today, Juliet is a mother of three, educator, speaker, registered nurse, poet, and author. Her professional career has led her to write poetry about her daily work experience and to write poems for the many patients she attends. Here is an excerpt from one such instance:

What Comfort can I offer you

When you are really going through?

There is not much for me to say

That will take your pain away.

What comforts can I offer you

When you don't know what to do?

I will go to God; he is my Father too,

And I will say a prayer for you.

Such is the inspiration that Juliet receives while working that helps to comfort those under her care. She shared how she is always open to a word that may come to her mind or spirit from God leading her to pen from her heart a verse, lyric or rhythm that will bless someone in their journey.

Once while attending an inservice hospital Customer Service Communication class, she was motivated to write a poem. She composed the entire poem during the class; and at the end of the session, she asked the instructor if she could share her poem with the those in attendance. It was a big hit with everyone. The instructor enjoyed the poem immensely and referred her to the Public Relations office who, with Juliet's permission, had it posted in the bulletin and mounted on the hospital wall as a motivator for the entire staff.

She states that her poetry is purely inspirational and she continues to write based on a need, experience or a thought that comes to mind. For those who wish to write poetry, Juliet suggests they start by reading some poems by poets who they admire, "reading the work of others can help you to develop your own style."

Juliet encourages people to rise up from their struggles. Learn something new and go on. Don't give up!

Juliet's Philosphy Of Life

My philosophy is to truly love and care for others. Use your gifts and abilities to encourage, motivate and inspire others to become the best they can be.

Inspirational Poem: "The Dream Won't Quit"

The following poem is Juliet's favorite. She shared this poem with my speech class the night she visited with us. Her positive approach to life shines through when she recites poetry and is so infectious. The students were moved by her words which lifted them up and gave them confidence to continue their pursuit of a successful career.

The dream that is in me

Just won't quit.

I try to forget it,

but it just won't quit.

I put it on the burner

way in the back.

No matter what I do

it keeps coming back.

I woke up this morning

and what did I hear?

A voice deep inside me

Saying, "Go without Fear."

I went to the neighbor

To have a little chat.

She said, "You are born for this",

And that is truly a fact.

The Dream Just Won't Quit

Poem: "I Stand Amazed At The Power Of The Will"

I stand amazed a the power of the will. It has the power to keep living or the power to kill.

People use it differently, but it is their choice. This one thing gave us our own voice.

I stand amazed at the power of the will. We can try to silence it, but it fights on still.

Each man and each woman has the power today, to live by design and in their own special way.

I stand amazed at the power of the will. it can speak out or it can choose to keep still.

We can use our will to do things from the heart. We can work together and strive to do our part.

I stand amazed at the power of the will. It will guide us through life as our purpose we fulfill.

We can choose to include God's spirit or choose to rebel. Whatever our decision, our life's story will tell.

Juliet's Latest Book

Juliet's Perspective On Living Life To The Fullest

This year, Juliet released her new book on living life to the fullest, Tips for Success and Fulfillment in Life. Her book contains chapter themes on difficult life issues and includes a personal workbook section reinforcing the positive lessons for readers. With her permission, I have posted some of the highlights from her book.

  • You must first love yourself before you can love others, even before you can love God.
  • Rid your life of unforgiveness so that you will be free to grow.
  • Develop yourself. Seek Growth. You have to step out of the boat and expose yourself to the harsh elements of life.
  • Respect others. Get rid of prejudism and negative thought patterns.
  • Give freely of yourself through time and talent. Don't expect to necessarily receive from that person you are giving to; but as you give, do it as unto God. He will provide and meet your needs using his vast resources. Cast your bread upon the water for it will come back to you.
  • Be content with what you have as you move to the next level. Do not be envious. Live where you are at and don't try to stretch over your present status. Have faith in God.
  • Surround yourself with positive people.
  • Follow your passion. What gives you the greatest pleasure? Don't give in and accept second best.
  • Live by faith. Live by the Word of God. Believe in yourself and that God is for you. You are an overcomer.
  • Take action daily. Write the vision down and act upon your dream and you will see it come to pass. Set a deadline and act upon it!
  • Develop your prayer life. It changes things. Elijah prayed and it didn't rain for three years. Jesus cursed the fig tree and it withered. Put it before God and he will orchestrate it.
  • Perseverance: You have to stand during trials. Stand on the Word.

Help Plant A Lifesaving Seed . . .

Your Life's Poem

An Aspiring Poet's Journey

This past summer,The Broward African American Research Library and Cultural Center held a book signing highlighting her books. Juliet read a few of her favorite poems to adults and children who attended and treated them to a batch of her delicious brownies. Her motto for this event was "we can change the world". She shared her view of the black experience, history of the culture and discussed the progress through time. She believes that all people, regardless of race, are one in Christ and are to encourage, motivate and support the goodness in life.

During her speaking events, she often recites her poem Haiti In Distress. As Juliet shared with me, "We may not be from that country but we can bridge a gap and extend love and care to those in need both here and abroad. We are one in our human experience and we all hurt, suffer loss, and need encouragement along life's journey; so wherever we find ourselves, do whatever we can to make a difference in the life of someone else. This is what it means to love our brothers and sisters. We are our brothers keeper and this will start healing in our land and in our nations." Here is a short excerpt from her poem, "Haiti In Distress":

Haiti is a small island and its humble people are in distress. They have suffered their share of struggles, poverty and unrest.

We need an international intervention from everyone. We can make a difference if we all chip in one by one.

. . . I call upon all humanitarian effort to immediately take a stand. Suffering knows no color, gender or boundaries and this we understand.

If you give food, water and shelter you will meet man's basic need. Ask God what you can do today and help plant a lifesaving seed.

I look for Juliet Wilson's faith and inspiration to change the world around her one person at a time. I also believe that the people she reaches will change the world and make it a better place for all mankind.
