What Is Santeria?

Santeria, also sometimes referred to as, La Religión, Regla de Ocha, La Regla Lucumí or Lukumi, is a very old, pantheistic Afro-Cuban religion developed from the beliefs and customs of the Yoruba people that incorporates some aspects of Catholicism. Often referred to as a form of witchcraft or voodoo, the religion was brought to the west when African slaves were brought to the Americas by force.

Today, the religion is most prevalent in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Santa Domingo, Haiti, and many other places within South American, the Caribbean, and the United States.

Practicing Santeria

Historically, many practiced Santeria in secret because they were forbidden to practice the religion openly. These people used the religion to ask the gods for help, healing, and freedom. Later, in countries where Catholicism was the main religion, they were allowed to practice Santeria if they agreed to convert to Catholicism. This explains the many similarities between Catholicism and Santeria.

Though mostly practiced among Hispanics and blacks, people of all races, cultures, and social standings practice Santeria. If you have no religious knowledge, you might think Santeria is nothing more than a benign religion practiced by a small cultural group. But this religion, while not one of the major global religions, is much more than that.

How I Became Involved in Santeria

In my 20's, I became involved with Santeria after knocking on a stranger's door to let them know it was open. A very nice women invited me in, and later told me that when I approached her door she saw a huge African spirit behind me. She went on to tell me that the spirit protected me.

This woman became my comadre, or midwife, and cleansed me by performing the blessing of the head. I was then taken to the Babaalawo, or priest, who told me who my orishas, or spirits, were, and how my comadre was to proceed with me. I then received my elekas, or spirit necklaces, and made my madam, an altar for La Madama. I was also told I had to make make Orcha, or be crowned in the religion as a priestess. I found the process very exciting as I was coming out of a very difficult time in my life, and everyone within the religion was kind and accepting of me.

One evening I attended a ceremony for one of my brothers in the religion. The Babaalawo came into the room and opened a case of ceremonial knives. Then, a goat was brought into the room and its throat was cut. Its blood was drained into a wooden bowl.

This event so shook my life that I asked God, "Why are people still sacrificing animals?" I heard his voice tell me that Jesus was the Lamb of God, slain and removed from the foundation of the world. From that day, I began to distance myself from my comadre and Santeria.

About a year later, I gave my heart to the Lord Jesus Christ and became born again. I realized that Jesus was all I needed for salvation, guidance, protection, and inspiration. Today, I am serving God as an ordained minister and a prophet.

What the Bible Says About Santeria

Below is a list of various practices and terminology within the Santeria religion, along with what the Bible has to say about each of these religious customs.

Orisha and Spirit Guides

The Orishas are the so-called emissaries (spirit guides) of Olodumare (God). They rule over the forces of nature and the endeavors of humanity. They manifest themselves at drumming parties by possessing a priest or priestess.

What the Bible Says

"The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and His kingdom ruleth over all."

Psalm 103:19

An Bembe is a drumming party given to give honor to the Orisha.

What the Bible Says

"Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness."

– Psalm 9:2

Trance Possession

A trance possession usually takes place at a Bembe. The Orisha is invited to join the party by entering into one of the priests. This is referred to as being "mounted" by the Orate. According to Santeria believers, the Orate has come down from heaven to be with them.

What the Bible Says

"And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger."

– 2 Kings 17:17

Trance Possession at a Bembe

Oshos is know as the warrior. He is the hunter and the scout of the Orishas.

What the Bible Says

"Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle."

– Psalm 24:8

These are beaded necklaces representing the Orishas. Receiving elekes is the first rite of passage in the Santeria religion. They represent a tearing away from your old life, and initiate your journey in the direction of the Orishas. They are under the spiritual care of your godmother or godfather’s Orishas.

What the Bible Says

"Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched."

–2 Kings 22:17

Also referred to as Elegua, this spirit is believed to be the owner the roads and doors to the natural world. Worshippers of Santeria believe that nothing can be done in the spirit or natural world without his permission.

What the Bible Says

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

– John 14:6

She lives and rules over the seas and lake. Her full name is Yeye Omo Eja, meaning, "Mother whose children are the fish."

What the Bible Says

"And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called the Seas: and God saw that it was good."

– Genesis 1:9

Ogun, the equivalent to St. Peter in Catholicism, is known as the God of iron, war and labor. The brother of Chango, he is the first one to be fed after an animal sacrifice.

What the Bible Says

"Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle."

– Psalm 24:8

"Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms."

– Jeremiah 51:20

Chango, the equivalent to St. Barbara in Catholicism, is the most popular of the Orishas. Chango rules over lightning, thunder, fire, drums, and dance. He is said to be strong willed and hot blooded. He represents the love of food, dance, song, and women.

What the Bible Says

"And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven."

– Luke 10:18

"For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God."

– Deuteronomy 4:24

Obatala, the equivalent Our Lady of Mercy in Catholicism, is the friendly father of all the Orishas and all humanity. He is considered the owner of all heads and the mind.

What the Bible Says

"Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God."

– Isaiah 44:6

Oya is the ruler of the winds, the whirlwind, and the gates of the cemetery. She rules over the dead.

What the Bible Says

"And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And the dead came forth..."

– John 11:43

"Behold, the whirlwind of the Lord goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked."

– Jeremiah 30:23

Oshun rules over brooks, streams, rivers, love and fertility. Most often approach this spirit about money matters.

What the Bible Says

"For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods."

– Psalm 24:2

"He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the Lord."

–Psalm 113:9

Orunmila represents wisdom and divination. His priests, the Babaalawos or “Fathers of the Secrets,” must devote themselves entirely to the practice of divination.

What the Bible Says

"Then the Lord said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart."

– Jeremiah 14:14

How to Break a Curse Associated With Santeria

If you have been cursed by the occult, follow the steps below to break it.

Step 1: Recite the following prayer.

"Father God, I believe that Jesus Christ is your son, and that he died for my sins. I have been involved in witchcraft, Santeria, and demonic practices. I ask that you forgive me for my sins. I reject Satan and all his power. I reject Santeria. I reject tarot cards. I reject everything I have done that is not pleasing to you. Satan, I want no part of you, or your works. Jesus, wash me in your blood, and take over my life. I receive you as my Savior, in Jesus Name, Amen!"

Step 2: Cleanse your home.

Cleanse your home by removing everything associated with Santeria. This means things such as:

  • Elekes
  • Madamas
  • Clothes used for rituals
  • Books
  • Pictures
  • Records
  • Anything sewn into pillows or dolls
  • Anything given to you for luck
  • Any item given to you by anyone in the religion
  • Candles used in prayers
  • Incense
  • Soperas de Santo (soup bowls)
  • Statues

Step 3: Bless your home.

Invite Christians into your home to have them anoint your household with oil and bless your home.

In Conclusion

The bible is very explicit on how God feels about the practice of the occult. Still, the pursuit of the paranormal is now mainstream, and is popularized by television shows and popular culture. Despite this, God has not changed His mind about the matter.

My involvement in Santeria was during the darkest period of my life. I later realized that for everything that is real, there is something that is counterfeit; and the occult is a counterfeit that tries to mimic true spirituality. When you open the dark door of the occult, you open yourself to dark and demonic spirits that can eventually take you far away from God and His peace.

The devil knew that God had a purpose for my life, and he wanted to abort my destiny. Because the hand of the Lord was on my life, the enemy could not have me. Who the Son sets free, is free indeed! Four years later, I gave my heart to the Lord and later went into ministry.

If you have been involved in the Santeria or the occult on any level, you can change your direction find forgiveness, healing and deliverance, through Jesus Christ. If you want to worship a god, worship the God of All Gods! He will not fail you or for forsake you.

Hello Russika. I want to help you reconnected with God. I want you to know that the Lord loves you, even if you have lost your way. The Bible says that God is married to the backslider. Jeremiah 3:14. He has not forsaken you and you are not lost because he knows exactly where you are. I want you to say this prayer. 'Father, I admit that I am a sinner. I ask that you forgive me of all my sins and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. I believe that Jesus Christ came to save me. I believe that he died on the cross and rose again from the dead. Lord, I ask that you come into my heart. Come into my life. Help me to serve you faithfully. Jesus, I accept you as my Savior right now, in Jesus name. Amen. Russika, begin reading the Bible starting with the New Testament and the book of John. I ask that you no longer go to clairvoyants because this is displeasing to God. God will lead you and guide you into all truth. Leviticus 19:31

“Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.

You are welcome Tim. The gifts God has given you are for good, you don't have to be in a church to be a blessing to others. Look for opportunities to be that blessing!

Olukayode Tokode, It is impossible to serve many gods. The Lord God is One and above him, there is no other!

Not until I gave my life and heart to Jesus, did I find peace, freedom and wealth. All my needs have always been provided because of my relationship with God! He is the one and only faithful God. When I pray, God answers. When I pray for the sick, they receive healing, and deliverance from depression and oppression. I have prayed for the deaf and they have received hearing again. God is real and my life has been forever blessed since I made a decision to serve Him and only Him.

Often people from African and other cultures try to serve God, but then still cling to cultural beliefs such as spirit husbands and spirit wives and the like. Holding onto these things will keep you in bondage and you will not move experience the fullness of God Signs and wonders and miracles are something I have always seen as a Christian.

Christianity is not something you do, it is something you are when the spirit of God comes to live within through a Personal, Intimate relationship with Jesus Christ, son of the Living God! I have seen a woman who spoke with and echo delivered when a spirit was cast out of her, she stood up and spoke normally. I have seen a man who sat on the ground begging with long stitches covering his knees healed and able to walk without pain when I prayed for him. I have seen a baby who the doctors said would never sit up or speak, be able to interact, sit up, speak and watch TV and laugh after prayer. I have seen a woman with a severe scoliosis of the spine who took 10 minutes to walk up one flight of stairs able to run up and down the stairs and bend down and touch her toes after prayer. I have seen the heart rate of a woman on life support increase as we prayed for her and though they thought she would die, she was healed and dismissed from the hospital one week later. I can not say what it is like when you were a Christian. All I can say is that the God I serve is a wonder-working God!

Such testimony is not unique or strange to me. I was a Christian and a minister for 28 years before I left Christianity. The testimony just shows the true nature of Christian faith. The faith arose through the destructive construction of other faiths. I have read the bible cover to cover several times and have had formal education in theology. Christianity is a fabricated religion. There is no intrinsic evidence in the bible that Matthew, Mark or John wrote the books that bear their names. We know the political processes that led to the emergence of Christianity. We also know that all forms of knowing whether religious or secular arise from human cognitive construction. We also know that Satan is a religious fabrication to describe that which is not in line with one's religious interest. If Santeria is demonic, so also Christianity. While I do not make an animal sacrifice and I do not believe in it, the so-called blood of Jesus has not liberated Africans who convert en-masse to Christianity from their miseries. That Christianity is superior to other religions is false. God is too big and infinite for any man to define only one way of reaching him/her/it. In the Bible, God is described with a masculine pronoun. Can I then ask how the gender of God was determined since God does not have a material existence? Christianity is a revealed religion which is nothing but the projection of the opinions and views of some people unto God as if God is the one saying it. Jesus did not die for the world he was killed for treason. Unto this historical character was erected the ancient religious practice of human sacrifice. There is an abundance of evidence in the history that human sacrifices were made to atone for the sins of fellow human beings. There is nothing new there. Santeria is not the only religion which involves animal sacrifice; Islam also does. Those who want to serve man-made Jesus Christ can go their way but leave the Orishas worshippers alone.

I visited the link you provided. It was wonderful and insightful. Fortunately, I learned of my spiritual gifts many years ago. Although I never participated in any religion which worshiped more than one God, it was the concept of "unity" emphasized in one faith which really helped me understand the Teachings of Jesus Christ.

Thank you for sharing and caring. And we shall keep praying for the church.

Yes, thanks so much for your comment. There is so much to learn, as well as unlearn. Denominationalism has done a lot to hurt the concept of who God really is. It separated people who have the same goal, which is to faithfully love and serve God. Please visit, http://spiritualgiftstoday.com

This is a powerful story. As a true believer of the Ministry of Jesus Christ, I'm glad you conquered the deceiving power of Satan. Although it's worth noting, such aspects of Christianity as "shouting" and having an "amen corner" grew out of slaves being forced to learn the Christian faith. This is important because until slavery occurred, doctrines such as "predestination" ruled the Christian faith. In other words, people of color shook off the old religions and applied those modes of worship to our faith. (We recognize a "living God," who created each soul different, and therefore, some of us have to move a little when praying, sit still, jump and dance, etc.)

I love your story because I had to spend time in other religions to fully understand and return to Christ. When I did, he said: "Son, I never left you. Now, you can be stronger for me." Thank you again for reminding me of the love of our Savior.

Oh, here we go again: do you really think that if there has been a satanic take over of this planet with media, government, and finance in the hands of satanists, did you really think you'd find divinity in a controlled-opposition judeo/xian/Muslim mainstream religion? Did you ever consider you're following the wolf in Shepherd's clothing? It works much better than sheep's clothing. There is no spiritual protection in mainstream controlled opposition religions that have you worship false archonic inversions of the creator God. I really don't want to continue this conversation because you may have already have placed yourself in jeopardy with your defamatory attitude towards the Orishas. it's like biting the hand that feeds you.

In case you need to know exactly where you went wrong: it was incredibly smug and foolish of you to repeat the Christian missionary LIES about our DIVINE AFRICAN KING OF KINGS! This was incredibly foolish of you. Now you know. Many are jaded to the true sense of divinity because the mainstream controlled opposition Abrahamic false religions are designed to create cognitive dissonance and distort reality. And you're in for a rude awakening.

It's so sad to read the words of close minded judgemental people. As a personal who attended 9 years of Christian school and had the word of God drilled in them, as I got older I had a void. I saught to fill this void by researching other religions/faiths. I,m now am involved with Lucumi faith which otherwise is called Santeria. I researched and asked questions and gained full understanding before I proceeded with this journey. I have found it is those who judge first and don't bother to inquire and be fully educated on something, that are the most ignorant. We are supposed to live amongst each other in peace even tho some views are not agreed upon. Not, if you don't see it my way your wrong and "evil". I will pray for you.

Wendy, I do not accept any belief that is not rooted in Holy Scripture!

Leviticus 19:31 'Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.' Deuteronomy 18:10-13

Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.

You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

The Bible is not to be a prop, to be placed on an alter, but to be used direction for our lives and how to have a direct relationship with him. There is not God but God!

It is a shame that in your zeal you ignorantly trash the faith of others. Those who worship the Bible trip themselves up because they claim to speak for the God of Love yet instead use this book as a club to persecute and offend others. It is a great thing that this country was founded on religious freedom and that practitioners of the Orisha honoring faiths will continue to worship as we are by law allowed to do. You should try to actually practice what Jesus taught, which was Love to thy Neighbors. If there ever was a mind-controlling cult, it is those who worship the Bible blindly with hatred and vengeance instead of actually doing what Jesus said!

X, Becoming a Christian has nothing to do with being trained. It is a matter of having an intimate relationship with God. It is a matter of turning your whole being to love and serve Him. Faith is not something you see, but something your embrace, without seeing. If you repent of your sins, God will make you clean and forgive you for every wrongdoing. As far as God being white, He is neither black, nor white, God is a spirit and a spirit has no color.

    • profile image

I was trained to be a Christian because the USA is a Christian nation , I was always spiritual and something about the Religion of Christianity was very discriminatory towards anyone who wasn't white and male. I no longer prescribe to a white male heavenly father (where's the heavenly mother?) or a white male heavenly son (where's the heavenly daughter?) this is all male white supremacy at its best, and if you don't believe you're gonna burn in hell for eternity. Bull shit total bullshit. There is nothing demonic about people of color having their own religion , it's only demonic because it doesn't fit white male supremacy.

I assure you I am not deceived! It's human flaws that can taint ANY religion. Why is it when one is allegedly happy and content with their faith that they have to run to tear down and condemn someone else's belief? I don't understand why this happens.

Not everyone who is a priest of Ocha is involved in Palo Mayombe. Here's a fun fact, many times it IS the Ocha who will forbid a priest to practice Palo Mayombe. Now why would that be? Evil and demonic fighting against itself? I don't think so.

In reading many of the biblical books such as Leviticus, I find them to be very anti-female and violent. Why is this? Because bottom line is that these texts were written by human men; any gospel that was written by a female was either destroyed or omitted.

What misguided and ignorant people. "If it ain't Go, it ain't good."? .... a "cult"? I don't even know where to start here because nothing I can say will allow you to see past your noses. First off, you don't think it's strange no other religious followers in the WORLD are less tolerant, practice true spirituality less, and less educated that overzealous Christians and extremist Muslims? That those two followings are the only ones who will not abide others in other religions to live peacefully in their faith without condemning them or allow them to openly help others in their own way out of the kindness of their hearts without turning up your noses and making your disgust known. I bet you still think gays are going to hell and all war is evil too. As a lover of Christ and as a devoted lover of Santeria and the Orishas......AND as someone who's studied religion formally for 17 years.... you're "sickness" of spirit and this direct opinion you tout as standard is all psychology and has very little to do with actual spirituality. Look up the actual meaning of a "cult" and compare your actions and words here with the description. Become educated for the sake of God. Literally. The Lord you describe as ever loving, tolerant, and forgiving in all things would find your judgement of others disgraceful. He told you you had no right to judge...that is for God. But you sit here judging and spitting hatred or condemnation with every word......making your entire argument void by lack of integrity.

You have obviously gone through a bad experience due to individual persons. The Orishas are NOT evil! In fact this ancient African religion pre-dates Christianity and Islam!

Please do NOT throw your Orishas away. Put them in a closet or give them to your former godparent or even just leave them at a botanica as a last resort. People can be evil and misuse power, but the Orishas are aspects of God.

I can think of countless cases of abuses by preachers, etc in Christian churches. With Ifa and Orishas I found my salvation which always eluded me within Christianity, might I add that I was mistreated worse than a dog by so called 'Christians.' So I can respect the beliefs of others, but I disagree vehemently when someone is throwing stones at my faith and giving advice to others that can carry serious consequence for their own spiritual well being.

If any of you have read the Gnostic Gospels you will see what the God of the Christians really is about. Jesus actually was showing people the real way to enlightenment which was twisted by Paul. Notice how different the God of the New Testament is from the God of the Old Testament? That's because it's NOT the same God. lol

I never heard of any of the Orishas saying "I am jealous, don't worship any God but me or else I'm going to smite you." But those words of fear and anger are heard throughout the Old Testament.

I know I'm igniting a firestorm here, but I have to speak the truth. There are multiple sides to every story.

Please read what the Holy Bible, that tells you exactly how God feels about these practices. You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.

Exodus 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Deuteronomy 18:10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

2Chronicles 33:6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

Leviticus 20:27 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.

editorsupremo, It all has it's root from Africa, when slave were sent to different ports and sold, this religious with them. This Santeria can be found just about everywhere. Some who practice have told me, they only work for good. But if it ain't God, it can't be good.

Fascinating hub. I've never heard of Santeria but the practises sound very similar to obia practised on the Islands, notably Jamaica.

Thank God you got out that gurl!!

Bitingtruths, I was a Christian only in name. I never repented of my sins and asked Jesus to come into my heart and be the Lord of my life. In short,I was religious. If I was a true Christian, I would have never become involved in this Cult. Now that I have given my heart to the Lord I have the peace and answers I was searching for.

Nice post. It's always good to follow a religion or spiritual practices, as you did in your youth, and outgrow it and find something else. Like you found Christianity perhaps your religious faith suits you and it is necessary for your spiritual health. Follow your path move forward undaunted perhaps you will make new discoveries. If you do not find any thing new then your faith has served you well and you did the right thing by adhering to it.

      God bless

WOW Faithful Daughter. I am so glad God set you free. You know I had the same struggle writing these hubs. I felt the old spirit trying to 1. pull on me, especially Yemaya and and felt them trying to make me fearful to write about it. Our God is the God over all gods! Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you! You writer your story my sister...write your story.

You have written an awesome hub. I had started to write a book about my past in this and could not finish it. I got sick in my spirit every time I recalled things to write about.

I was born surrounded by this religion and I was also a Palo Mayombe priestess. I have been redeemed and delivered from these deceiving and demonic cults. Hopefully others that are experimenting or are deep in this will read your hub and come out of it like you and I did. There are many hubbers here that are santeros and babalawos educating others about their cult. If they only knew they are being deceived.

      Voted up and useful.
