Learning Romanian?

Do you want to surprise someone special with romantic Romanian phrases? Many of those who want to learn to speak Romanian are doing this because they are in love with a Romanian. This is why I decided to make a list of useful romantic Romanian phrases for everyone.

Instructions for Use

While most of these phrases are perfectly suited to be put in a written message, please do not attempt to say them to your beloved, unless you want to make him or her laugh. This might sound funny and awkward if you try to pronounce them without knowing the rules.

If you want to give it a try anyway (because you speak some Romanian or you don't care and take the risk of being funny), go practice the Romanian pronunciation first or ask someone in a language forum to teach you how to pronounce it correctly.

The following phrases can be equally used for guys and girls unless otherwise stated.

  • Te iubesc = I love you
  • Imi placi / Imi place de tine = I like you
  • The ador = I adore you
  • Mi-e dor de tine = I miss you
  • Iti dau inima mea = I give you my heart
  • Ma gandesc la tine = I'm thinking of you
  • Esti special / speciala = You are special (if it's a guy / a girl)
  • Esti dulce = You are sweet
  • M-am indragostit de tine = I fell in love with you
  • Ma faci fericit / fericita = You make me happy (if you're a guy / a girl)
  • The doresc = I want you

So Many Ways to Say "I Love You"

  • The voi iubi mereu = I will always love you
  • The iubesc cu toata inima = I love you with all my heart
  • The iubesc din suflet = I love you from the soul
  • The iubesc mult de tot = I love you a lot

The English translation of these phrases might sound somewhat weird to you. Don't worry, they make perfect sense in Romanian and, be assured, most Romanians love cheesiness.

Cheesy Phrases

  • Inima mea iti apartine = My heart belongs to you
  • Mi-ai furat inima = You stole my heart

Love Phrases for Daily Use

Romanian Love Sayings

The following proverbs are not translated word for word. They are more or less the equivalent of the English proverbs.

  • Dragostea nu se face cu sila. - Love cannot be compelled.
  • Dragostea nu are ochi. / Dragostea e oarba, dar casatoria ai gaseste leacul. - Love is blind.
  • Dragostea nu e o mosie ca sa o iei cu chirie. - Love is not found in the market.
  • Iubirea ca moartea e de tare. - Love is strong as death.
  • Cu cat mai dulce limba dragostei la inceput, cu atat mai amara pe la sfarsit. - is sweet in the beginning but sour in the ending.
  • Cine la dragoste cade, antai mintea i se scade. - Love is without reason.
  • Nimic peste putintã la dragoste se-ntelege. - Love will find a way
  • Iubirea trece prin apa, nu-i e frica ca se-neaca. - Love will go through stone walls.
  • Nici o boala nu-i mai grea ca dorul si dragostea. - No herb will cure love.
  • Dragostea dintai nu se uita. - No love like the first love.
  • Dragostea cea veche ati sopteste la ureche. - Old love will not be forgotten.

God created Romania so everyone can fall in love with someone. ; )

larrytoren on May 29, 2018:

My girlfriend started appreciating me more after I've used a few sentences from your lesson above.

I'm using one of your Love phrases for daily use now every day.

I couldn't find Mary's link below, but I found another one with the pronunciation of these words, as this is quite important to be able to pronounce the right phrase correctly

Mary on June 07, 2015:

Great Article,

Based on your advices I surprised my husband and he was impressed.

I'm calling him now "Puiul meu", it's just that I did not know exactly how to pronounce it.

Thank you very much

While searching I also found a complementary article at

looks like they broke some of the character encoding with the migration to hubpages. would be nice to get that fixed.

Georgiana on March 15, 2015:

I should have say, is more correct to say like this:

scumpa mea, ingerasul meu

Is not so direct translation.

Jolene on January 11, 2015:

It really helps me. \(^u^)/

Every time when I'm writing with him and send him something Romanian, he writes back in Romanian, and it's usually very sweet.

You need a reason to learn a language, and he's mine

Hannah on November 18, 2014:

This is so amazing and helpful! My boyfriend is romanian and I am head over heels in love with him. I said some of these phrases to him and he was ecstatic!! Thank you so much!

Georgiana on October 06, 2014:

"Scumpul meu ingeras" for a girl

AngeGardien on April 26, 2014:

@anonymous: I believe they got it backwards...

I am not Romanian but from talking with a Romanian "friend" (-; (-; (-; of mine:

- An ending with "ul" is for a guy, "a" for a woman.

- "meu" is "mine" for a guy, "mea" is "mine for a girl...

So I believe he was absolutely right, you should have said "scumpul meu" and he would have said "scumpa mea" to you..

I believe the following entries should be used like this:

Ingerasul meu = My little angel (for a guy)

Dragostea mea = My love (for a girl)

As for that "friend" or mine, I call her

"scumpa mea ingeraÈa"

which I believe means my sweet/precious little angel...

I believe the equivalent for a guy would be

"scumpul meu ingerasul"

La revedere!

AngeGardien on April 21, 2014:

@Deeds-Gary: It's kinda too late for that but you would impress her a lot more by doing that for Dragobete (Romanian's "valentine" day on February 24th) and offering her a MarÈiÈor on March 1st...

Deeds-Gary on February 02, 2014:

With Valentine's Day coming up I was wondering how you would ask a Romanian Girl to be your Valentine for Valentines Day?

MICHIO on April 28, 2013:

@MICHIO: printesa........ Ooops

MICHIO on April 28, 2013:

@anonymous: noapte buna prinÈesÄ Starlight...... is how I would say this.

anonymous on April 26, 2013:

I told my boyfriend who is Romanian Scumpa mea and he said he felt like that was wrong, like that is what he would say. He is a little rough around the edges in regards to he Romanian because he hasn't lived there since he was 10, but I was wondering what is actually correct? I really love using this site! It has made us be able to be a lot closer. Thanks!

anonymous on April 24, 2013:

i have a friend who i refer to as starlight .... i do not trust Google translate, how would i say good night princess starlight in the right way . can anybody help

anonymous on April 04, 2013:

@MICHIO: The subject -- "eu" (I) in this case -- is implied by the verb and is optional. So "Eu the iubesc" and "The iubesc" are equivalent.

MICHIO on January 22, 2013:

Something I always find interesting in any language is how different people say things, for example one time my girlfriend and I were watching a movie in English and she asked me what was said. I told her I didn't know and she said but it was English and I said yes but some people speak English and I can't understand. Another thing is most people say The iubesc= I love you in Romanian but my girlfriend taught me that she writes it Eu the iubesc=I love you. So I think it depends who is teaching us and we will say and write as they do. I really like this site.

MICHIO on January 22, 2013:

@anonymous: Jess, Happy you are here.I suppose there are several ways to say things in any language, and I have no doubt that the way this is written would be understood. I think if I was gonna say the phrase I love you like crazy, I would write this way=The iubesc ca un nebun. Im thinking of you is exactly how I would say that phrase. Please I'm no expert Im just trying to share my own experience and hope this can help you or anyone else .BTW Romanian is the most difficult language to learn in my opinion, having its roots from Latin among others.

anonymous on January 21, 2013:

@anonymous: hahah this is what happened to me and my current boyfriend. The intensity of it is like no other. We've been together for awhile now and it certainly was 'love at first sight' indeed. All the way down to the WAY we met. *sigh* either Romanians exude some kind of special love that others around them instantly fall in love with, or we are just some lucky people who were able to come across our soul mates who just happen to be romanian :) (most likely the 2nd option hehe). Either way, this page is SO wonderful for making it a little easier for non romanians 'like us' to communicate with the loves of our lives. <3

anonymous on January 21, 2013:

I used: Ma gandesc la tine = I'm thinking of you and The iubesc la nebunie = I love you like crazy. I just added 'Si' before Te iubesc la nebunie, in order to make it flow well when used in a sentence together :) ultimately saying, "I'm thinking of you and I love you like crazy". Thank you for the translations!! I love them and my extremely handsome romanian boyfriend loves getting/hearing them! He says I'm getting better at learning how to speak in romanian hehe

anonymous on November 03, 2012:

Hey this rocks, just what I'm looking for

sibian on October 14, 2012:

Foarte frumoase traduceri, foarte inspirate.

Very nice translations, some of them I wouldn't have thought of, even after 17 years in Australia and using English daily.

Great lens

esti frate dragostea= Love you brother......So I would agree with other person that posted answer.Often its hard to use phrases back and forth, and also my Romanian is not perfect,I know enough to just get in trouble sometimes.LOL

anonymous on March 18, 2012:

@anonymous: My roots are on the wrong side of the Danube fr this, but it looks like a misspelled attempt to say, "It's brotherly love". Find out from someone who actually knows, though.

anonymous on March 12, 2012:

i am trying to learn this beautiful language so i can communicate better with my partner and her family, very helpful site- i need work on the grammar, and i need a miracle to happen if im going to ever pronounce it correctly :P

anonymous on December 13, 2011:

I fell in love with a beautiful sweet Romanian girl 3 years ago,I have visited Romania 6 or 8 times and I have come to really like the people, the food and OFC the country.Romanian people understand how to enjoy life and they are friendly and helpful,I never believed in love at first site but that's what happened to me the first time I saw her lovely eyes and then she smiled and that's was it. If you have never visited Romania do yourself a favor and go,I promise you will like very much and want to go back soon.

anonymous on November 30, 2011:

To the foregoing I add: I don't know if this is "attitude" or "other", but Romanians seem to combine the intensity of Spaniards with the whimsy of Brazilians, and it's fascinating.

anonymous on November 30, 2011:

I'm half Bulgarian, and it's clear to me you guys are having more fun north of the Danube.

anonymous on June 19, 2011:
