The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Record-Breaking Body Parts
Some people hone their natural talents to break world records. The world's fastest runner, Usain Bolt, ran 100 meters in 9.59 seconds, and 200 meters in 19.19 seconds. Or consider the world's most prolific "author," Philip M. Parker, who patented a program that produces e-books based on data from search queries. To date, Parker has "written" more than 20,000 titles available on Amazon.
Yet there are others with no special abilities who have managed to break records by doing things anyone can do, but few would want to do: growing abnormally large body parts.
Longest Fingernails - Melvin Boothe
Melvin Boothe's unmanicured nails had a total length of 9.85 meters up until his death in 2009. That's about one meter of nail per finger. While growing out his nails out for decades, without shaping or maintaining them, his nails twisted in to roughly textured yellow spirals. The female record holder for longest nails, Lee Redmond, at least took care of her talons so that they curved in the shape of manageable arcs which she could curl and move out of the way to perform everyday tasks. Redmond lost her nails in a car accident in 2009, but has since started to regrow them.
Largest Breast Augmentation - Sheyla Hershey
Brazilian-born nut-job Sheyla Hershey has never been satisfied with the size of her breasts, not even after she broke the world record for largest implants. Hershey's large bust was achieved with a non-FDA-approved method of augmentation called polypropylene string implants, which coaxes the body to grow breast tissue around the implanted objects.
When her implants caused a blood infection in 2010, the implants and most of her own breast tissue had to be removed. The loss of her fake boobs reportedly drove her to a suicide attempt in 2011. During to her appearance on My Strange Addicition, Hershey proclaimed that she is "addicted" to enlarging her breasts and loves them like her children.
As soon a she was able, Hershey began re-enlarging her breasts with plastic surgeons in her home country. She is now a size 38KKK or 38MMM according to various reports.
Longest Hair - Xie Qiuping
Xie Qiuping has been growing out her hair since 1973, when she was just a 13-year-old girl. To keep her hair healthy and encourage its growth, she follows a simple beauty regimen that includes cleaning her hair and scalp a few times a week. She doesn't use styling product or dyes, and often keeps her lengthy tresses in a braid. In 2004 Guinness officials measured her hair at 5.627 meters and so far no one else has broken her record.
Biggest Lips - Kristina Rei
According to Kristina Rei, she had always wanted larger lips since she was four years old. Her beauty idol was cartoon character Jessica Rabbit, whose exaggerated proportions were drawn for comedic effect, not to serve as a beauty standard for real humans. When Rei she was around 20 and could afford cosmetic enhancements, she began a series of lip injections that so far have cost about $6000.
Luckily she has never suffered from infections, but the injections are very painful. Because they do not last, she has to keep getting injections to maintain their current size.
Kristina Rei does not plan to stop her cosmetic surgery adventures, and during an interview said she eventually wants to get DD breast implants, a nose job, and pointed elf ears.
Biggest Biceps - Moustafa Ismail
According to legend, when Moustafa Ismail was a young teen, a relative poked fun at his soft frame. So for the next 10 years, Ismail showed them wrong by focusing on a single body part. He now holds two superlative records for his arms, world's biggest and world's grossest. The "human Popeye" doesn't eat spinach to grow muscles that look like tumors, he just works out at the gym twice a day.
Controversy over his biceps arose when other body builders mad allegations that he injected oils into his arms to make them appear bigger. Called synthols, these oils are popular with bodybuilders doing photo shoots. Though it was never proven whether or not Ismail injected filler into his arms, the allegations were enough for Guinness to remove his name from their records.
Most Tattooed - Lucky Diamond Rich
When it comes to tattoos, record officials calculate the percent of skin that has been inked. A New Zealand-born Australian man who goes by the stage name Lucky Diamond Rich is the world's most tattooed man, with 100% of his body surface covered in tattoos. Nobody can beat his record, but some may tie it in the future.
After getting most of his skin tattooed, Rich covered his body in black ink, over which he applied white ink tattoos. Now he is starting to get colored tattoos over his white ones. Unlike other bodily record-breakers, Lucky Diamond Rich's hobby does not get in the way of his life or career. Having been a street artist and circus performer since he was 16, Rich sees his tattooing passion as part of his art.
