Dangerous Health Risks of Meat - New Evidence
The dangerous health risks of meat, as it is produced today, are still widely ignored. Despite recent World Health Organisation evidence and warnings that eating processed meat increases the risk of cancer, many of us still don’t want to know about the real dangers of meat consumption. Reducing the amount of meat you and your children eat may be the answer to avoiding today's common illnesses and obesity.
Being Vegetarian may be Safer
The reason I am a vegetarian is not so much because “I feel sorry for the poor animals” although I agree that most animals reared for human consumption would be better off not having been born. A more selfish reason for not eating meat is that I have done the research and become aware of the real dangers of meat consumption. Eating meat is one of the biggest health hazard today. If you are squeamish, don’t read the rest of this article. That's right, you can carry on burying your head in the sand. However, if you do manage to get to the end of this article, you too will probably decide to change your eating habits.
What Are the Animals we Eat Fed On?
Meat-eaters have a right to know what the cows, pigs, lamb and hens and turkeys they consume are fed on. Among other ingredients, those herbivorous animals are given reject meat mixed with fecal matter (pooh) to eat. The shocking information that follows comes from fourth-generation dairy farmer and cattle rancher Howard Lyman, the Cattle Rancher Who Won’t Eat Meat. He grew up on an industrial farm and ran a feedlot operation there for over two decades. Listen to what he has to say.
When an animal is killed for food, about half of its weight is not sold to the human food industry. The intestines (and their contents!), the head, hooves, and horns, the bones and blood are deposited into huge grinders at “rendering” plants. Also, entire carcasses that are diseased are added to the rendering mix. Rendering is a multi-billion-a-year industry, dealing with fifty billion pounds of animal parts and sick animals a year. No animal is too ill, too cancerous, or too decomposed to be included in the raw product of a rendering plant.
Pet or Meat?
Six or seven million house pets that are euthanized in animal shelters every year also end up at the renders. A large city like Los Angeles sends about three hundred tons of euthanized dogs and cats to the rendering plant on a monthly basis. Animals caught and culled by control agencies, and roadkill, are also taken to the rendering plants. Because road kill is not picked up on a daily basis, in the summer, roadkill collectors can usually smell their catch to find it. So you may well be eating meat that has, in part, been fed on your favorite beloved house pet!
At the rendering plant, these horrid ingredients are then ground and steam-cooked, the lighter, fatty materials float up to the top, get refined and used in products such as lubricants, cosmetics, soaps, candles, and waxes. The rest, heavier protein stuff is dried and made into a brown powder that includes fecal material. This brown powder is added to almost all pet food as well as to livestock feed. It is called "protein concentrates".
Federal Department of Agriculture
With growing concern about the spread of Mad Cow disease, the FDA put in place a law that bans the feeding of protein from cud-chewing animals to ruminants (cattle to cattle). Therefore, to the degree that the law is enforced, cows are no longer the cannibals they used to be. They are no longer fed on other cows, sheep, or goats. However, they are still fed ground-up cats, dogs, pigs, horses, turkeys and chickens, as well as fecal matter and blood from their own species. Beef cattle are consistently given food supplemented with rendered animal parts. The use of animal excrement in feed is common. Livestock owners find it an effective way of getting rid of a fraction of the 1.6 million tons of livestock wastes produced annually by the meat industry.
- Some diseases, like rabies, are transmitted from the host animal to those who eat that animal.
- Food poisoning from the E. Coli bacteria, which results from fecal contamination of food, is the cause of death of nine thousand Americans per year.
- About 85 percent of all food poisoning comes from bad meat.
- Mad Cow disease sometimes “jumps” species and can develop into a new brand of the always fatal, brain-wasting Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans.
- Parkinsons and dementia are on the increase.
- One in three people dies of cancer.
How Often Do YOU Eat Meat?
Why is one animal chosen as a pet above another? One beloved pet is spoiled with the other animal in tins: salmon, tuna, duck, chicken, lamb, and ox. Human interaction with animals is full of incomprehensible contradictions. Supermarket shelves bulge with the most extravagant products for our beloved pets. In the next aisle other ruthlessly reared and bloodily cut up animals are displayed for human consumption.

Eating Meat Kills the Planet
Meat production involves the exploitation of nature. The reason for the souring of the soil is evaporation of ammonia from manure, followed by conversion to nitric acid. This produces acid rain. The over-consumption of meat is, in part, the cause of global warming. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, livestock fumes produce 18% of the CO2 contributing to the greenhouse effect. The meat industry contributes more to climate change than all transportation worldwide. See link at the end.
Must-Watch Videos with New Evidence
Dr. Michael Klaper’s most entertaining and incredibly informative talk, featured here in the following 5 videos, says a lot more on the dangers of meat consumption than I could ever put into a single hub. If you don’t have the time to watch the talk now, then bookmark this page for later but please watch some of them before putting another bite of meat into your mouth. I promise you won’t regret it. If not for your own sake, be informed for the sake of your children’s future health. The real dangerous health risks of meat consumption warrant a little of your time to watch these videos.
1. Food That Kills
Meat Production is Bad Economics
Cattle take up far more land than crops to produce the same amount of food. Amazon forests are clear felled to produce temporary grazing for Brazilian beef cattle. Meat is a waste of land and a waste of the food that livestock converts into a small amount of meat.
2. Plugged up Arteries
Only 3 Rules to Follow
- Cut out saturated fats: any fatty substance that is solid, like the white bits in bacon, sausages and ham, butter, cheese, lard etc. They clog up the arteries and cause obesity and heart failure.
- Eat fruit, raw vegetables, pulses, mushrooms, and nuts.
- For carbohydrates: whole meal grainy bread, rice, potatoes, couscous, pasta.
3. Breast and Prostate Cancer
Life Made Easy and Healthy
Eating "real" food is much more simple than a meat eater could ever imagine. By cutting out meat and dairy from your diet your body becomes stronger, slimmer, and much more happy.
4. What do you Feed your Kids?
Child Obesity is on the increase at an alarming rate. If current trends continue many parents will lose their children to diabetes, heart failure, and cancer. Who is responsible for this poor state of affairs? The food industry? Sure. But who feeds the children? The enablers, the parents who buy the wrong types of food. Parents have a responsibility to be informed and not to become the enablers of children's dangerous eating habits.

The Living Other by Diana Blok, Ata Kando and Sacha De Boer
The evidence of the dangerous health risks of meat bought in supermarkets is now clear. Even if I was to believe only half of the information I have gathered here, out in the real world, I see that people and children are getting obese and sick all around me at alarmingly increasing speed. Statistics promises that 2 /3rd of us will get cancer. Cancer has become a growth for profits industry.
No thank you. Being aware of the dangerous health risks of meat consumption, and reducing meat consumption, or even better, going vegetarian gives you a better chance of survival. If more of us were informed, perhaps the evil and so damaging meat industry would be outlawed, like the slave trade. One day soon, like apartheid, the Berlin Wall, or cigarette smoking, meat production in its current industrial form will vanish. Let us remain optimistic and start at number one, yours truly.
