According to the play, misunderstandings relating to the customs and beliefs of Marua tribe arise as a result of the clash between the tribe's customs and the modern view of such practices.
Religion (Christianity) also plays a hand in disapproving the traditional practices as they go against the religion's teachings.
Remi was against being forced to marry Thoni, his brother's wife after his brother died in an accident. He felt it wasn't right to be forced to marry someone against their will. One has the liberty to choose the person he loves and wants to get married to. This is the major reason he ran away from the village to the city. He didn't feel wife inheritance was fair at all.
When Nyobi blessed the traditional medicine she became repentant. She started having doubts as to whether God will not assist her in bringing back her son. The Christian teachings are against doing anything that is related to the gods as they are evil. Only the true God should be worshipped.
When the elders left the medicine covered in banana leaves at Remi's room, Remi knew the medicine was meant to lure (influence) him to go back to his village. He vowed to get rid of all the village's traditions and customs that are barbaric or of no use.
Thus, we can see the modern understanding of these practices and beliefs have no justifiable grounds why they should be practised. Also, religions such as Christianity are against the practices that deem are evil and barabaric.
On the other hand, the elders and the villagers that stick with their traditions believe Christianity is evil because it's man's religion, and that the modern life goes against the will of wishes of their gods who guide their community as a tribe.
