They are as follows:
1. Wife inheritance. When Remi's elder brother died, he was required to marry his late brother's widow (Thoni).
2. According to the Marua's beliefs, a woman is not a woman if she doesn't have a child. The villagers believe women attain that status when they bear children.
3. Traditional medicine. The villagers believe traditional medicines are powerful - can do wonders or miraculous things. When the elders who visited Remi left the traditional medicine wrapped in banana leaves at his house, they thought the medicine had power to influence Remi to return back home.
4. Man is the head of a house. Nyobi laments that her husband and elder son died and Remi has refused to back home. She says that a house without a man is not a house. The villagers believe men bring life in a house (family) and the ones to make decisions.
